Full and By Family Follies by Art Myers, 2019, Photographic Gallery of Fine Art Books, San Diego, CA

About the Book

Each of the fifty vignettes in this book describes an interesting past event, sometimes serious but mostly humorous, that involved a member of Art Myers' family, hence the title Family Follies. And as Myers reminds us in the introduction, the definition of the word folly begs further discussion. The little stories run from a few lines to a page in length, and each narrative rather than focusing on some high drama or violent or mysterious happening concerns itself with common everyday experiences. And that is only half the book’s composition. Two trained and working artists, Ellen Dieter and Becky Myers, painters both, contributed original artwork to the book. A painting by one or the other artist can be found adjacent to each narrative. The paintings are not intended to be related to the Follies accounts, but have found a nice palette—a showcase—in the book. However, of interest to puzzle solvers, readers will indeed find some connection between each “folly” and the paired painting. It might be a word in the title, a color in the painting, or something in the subject matter of either. Or an entirely different link. But the search is enough to raise the heartbeat of a serious puzzle solver.

Full and By Full and By: A Doctor's Life of Stethoscopes, Sailboats, and SLRs by Art Myers, 2017, Photographic Gallery of Fine Art Books, San Diego, CA

About the Book

Who would have thought that an offhand comment would lead to a life-changing adventure? It might have started as crazy talk, but to one man's wife, it was an invitation to move beyond the ordinary. Full and By: A Doctor's Life of Stethoscopes, Sailboats, and SLRs tells the tale of how Art Myers went from schoolboy to physician to world traveler, with his family packed aboard a forty-one-foot sailboat and plans for a future in a tropical paradise. Neither rich nor privileged, Myers attended no fewer than fourteen grade schools before going to college, medical school, and residency training. He learned along the way that his talents could serve the greater good and volunteered his time while maintaining control over his own destiny. Full and By is the inspiring tale of a man who continues to lead a life well lived.

Portfolio Portfolio: Art Myers—A Quarter Century of Photographs by Art Myers, 2015, Photographic Gallery of Fine Art Books, San Diego, CA

About the Book

This book presents the heart of Myers' image making. The first half of the book, “The Family of Women,” is poignantly introduced by the nationally influential arts writer Leah Ollman. The photographs document women coping with life-altering adversities whose misfortunes are frequently spoken about only in hushed tones—HIV, cancer, homelessness. Myers approaches his subjects with knowledge and understanding and with the sensitivity of a caring physician. In Portfolio's second half, “Beyond The Family of Women,” Myers presents a potpourri of more traditional subjects—sometimes seriously and other times humorously. And without apology, he focuses his camera on the beauty and grace of the human body.

Winged-Victory-2nd-ed Winged Victory: Altered Images—Transcending Breast Cancer by Art Myers, Poetry by Maria Marrocchino, Second Edition, Revised and Expanded with the addition of French women, 2009, Photographic Gallery of Fine Art Books, San Diego, CA

About the Book

The book is necessary and encouraging for cancer survivors, their loved ones and others who challenge themselves in life.”
Lisa Phelps, Small Press Magazine

Art Myers' Inspiration for Publishing this Book

I am still haunted by the memory of the phone call from my mother telling me in a trembling voice that my sister, Joanne, still in her thirties, had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Following a prolonged heroic battle to survive, she was to eventually die from the disease. Two decades later I anxiously faced a surgeon in a hospital waiting room as he uttered the dreaded words, “Your wife has breast cancer.”

I was not prepared for the overwhelming effect that breast cancer in two close family members would have on my life. I learned that anxiety about survival, initially the most important worry, can give way later to a new unease both in the survivor and her partner. The woman may begin to cover her nakedness fearing a spouse's averted glance, or turn away from the reflection in a mirror that constantly reminds her of fears of diminished femininity. A partner withdraws a hand to avoid touching a scar where once was a graceful curve. Lovers draw apart, an absent breast now a barrier to their intimacy. I undertook this photographic project hoping to show that a woman's fundamental nature is not dependent on anything external, that the loss of part or all of her breast is not a threat to her essential being. I hope that these pictures, personal vignettes about the women, and poems created especially for this book will reveal the persistence of a woman's beauty, strength, and femaleness in all of its complexity, even after the transforming experience of breast cancer.

The Amazon Body (Le Corps Amazone) The Amazon Body (Le Corps Amazone), Documentary Film, 2010, A Wild Eye/France 3 Bourgogne Franche Comté/Images Plus Co-Production, Filmed and Directed by Anja Unger, Executive Producers Bernard Bloch and Frédéric Féraud, 75 minutes

About the Film

The Amazon Body discusses female beauty after breast removal due to cancer. The documentary follows Myers in Paris as he photographs women having undergone treatment for breast cancer. Annick Parent, co-founder of the support group les amazones s'exposent for French women who have undergone breast cancer surgery, explains modern-day Amazons as women who have lost a breast in their battle with cancer, but certainly not their vitality. They have risen to the challenge of changing the way we look at Amazons by allowing us to familiarize ourselves with what is seldom seen: a woman with a single breast.
